Short version: your chat is read in your browser. We only use a sample of it to write your song, and we don't store your chat. Here's the long version, still short.
Your chat file
When you drop a WhatsApp export or your Mac's Messages file into chatbop, it's opened and parsed on your device, in your browser. The file itself is never uploaded to us as a whole. For iMessage, your browser lists your conversations and only reads the one you pick.
Your browser counts messages, emojis and late-night texts, and replaces personal data in the messages (phone numbers, emails, links, card and account numbers, street addresses) with placeholders. It then sends the messages, in parts, to our server, together with those stats, the names you choose and your song settings (who it's for, the genre, the language, anything you tell us to include or avoid). For a pasted chat or a voice note, a sample of at most around 120,000 characters is sent instead.
Screenshots are the exception. If you choose to add screenshots of a conversation, your browser makes the images smaller and sends them to our server, which passes them to Anthropic (Claude) to copy out the messages. The images are held in memory for those few seconds only: we don't store them, and Anthropic processes them under its commercial API terms, which exclude training on them. Only the copied-out messages come back to your browser, and from there they are treated like any other chat.
Writing the song
Our server sends the messages to a sorting model, Jev by TypeSafe AI, reached through OpenRouter. It doesn't write anything: it gives every message a score for how much it says about the two of you, and only the few hundred best-scored messages go on to Anthropic (the company behind Claude), which writes the title, lyrics and style of your song. When the sorter is unavailable, a sample of the chat (at most around 120,000 characters) goes to Anthropic instead. Both process the data under their commercial API terms, which exclude training on it. The messages are not kept on our servers: only the song, its lyrics and the quoted lines stay, so it can be re-recorded, and they go when the song goes.
Recording the song
To turn lyrics into music, we send the lyrics, title and musical style (not your chat) to our music-generation provider. Once a take is finished we copy the audio to our own storage so your song link keeps working; the provider deletes its copy after about two weeks.
Payments
Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number. We keep a payment reference so we know which song it unlocked.
What we keep, and for how long
Once a song is written we keep the song itself (title, lyrics, the handful of quoted “receipts”, fun facts and the audio) on our servers so its link works on any device. A song that is never recorded is deleted after 30 days; a recorded song is kept for a year, or until you ask us to delete it. We also keep the email address you confirmed, to send you the song and to show you your songs when you sign in, and nothing else.
Analytics
To see where people get stuck, we use Amplitude. It records which pages you open and what you choose along the way (who the song is for, the music style, the language), plus numbers about your chat: how many messages, how many people, the size of the file. It never gets what was said, the names, your lyrics or your email. To fix what is confusing, Amplitude also keeps a replay of your visit: what the pages of chatbop showed and where you clicked or typed, on this site only. Password, email and card fields are hidden in it, and the payment form is never visible to us.
Advertising
To know whether our ads work, the site loads the Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and TikTok pixels. They set cookies and tell those two companies which pages of chatbop you opened and whether you made a song, reached the offer, started checkout or paid, with the price. When you pay, our server also confirms the purchase to them, with a scrambled (hashed) version of your email, your IP address and browser, so the sale is counted even when the pixel was blocked. We never send them your chat, your lyrics or your name.
Be nice to the people in your chat
- Only upload conversations you're part of.
- Your friends are in there too. Our Terms of Service require you to ask every other participant and get their agreement before you upload the chat and before you share the song. If you're in a chat that was turned into a song without your consent, write to us and we'll remove it.
- Don't use chatbop to embarrass, harass or expose anyone.
